UKPHR have updated their FTP processes
UKPHR has updated how we handle fitness to practise (FtP) concerns, and we’ve now published the new framework in full. This is the biggest change to our FtP arrangements since the Register began, and we want to be clear about what’s changed and what it means in practice.
Why we’ve updated the framework
Our FtP framework sets out how we identify and respond to concerns about the professionals on our register. As the Register has grown and our regulatory practice has matured, the framework needed to catch up. We’ve updated it to reflect current best practice, to align with regulators of comparable professionals such as the General Medical Council, and to make it clearer for everyone who needs to use it.
What has changed
The updated framework covers the whole FtP process; from the moment a concern reaches us through to final decision and appeal. The key changes are:
- a clearer three-stage process – triage, investigation, and FtP panel – with the option to close a case at any point
- new provisions on resolving some concerns by agreement, and on restoration to the registe
- clearer rules on confidentiality, and conflicts of interest or bias
- plainer terminology throughout, in line with standard regulatory language
What stays the same
The purpose of the FtP process hasn’t changed: to protect the public, uphold professional standards, and maintain confidence in the profession. The tests and decision-making criteria are the same, and the sanctions available to a Fitness to Practise Panel are as before.
Where to find the documents
