Who can register with UKPHR?

Why register?
Registration is designed to assure the public and employers that multidisciplinary public health professionals are appropriately qualified and competent. We set standards for registration that are recognised throughout the United Kingdom and provide significant public protection from unprofessional or unethical behaviour.
The primary reason for the UKPHR is for the protection of the general public, professional accreditation, and registrants may gain the benefit of improved access to employment.

What categories of registration does UKPHR offer?
There are a three of categories of UKPHR registration:
Practitioners can achieve registration in 2 ways:

- If you have experience of working autonomously in public health, you can apply to join a local scheme in your region, then collate a portfolio which will be assessed. This level of registration can take from 1-2 years to achieve.
- If you are just beginning your career in Public Health, you may wish to register via the Public Health Apprenticeship route; this provides work-based training and learning. Then when you complete your apprenticeship, you can apply for registration with UKPHR.
For both of these routes, you will be expected to demonstrate competence in line with UKPHR’s Practitioner Standards.
This registration category is for those who are undertaking the Faculty of Public Health’s Specialist training
Those applying for Public Health Specialist registration are working at a senior level (consultant or equivalent); usually this is at Level 8 and above of the Skills for Health Career Framework.
Specialists can achieve registration in 3 ways:
- Via the Public Health Specialty Registrar training route mentioned above (this can take up to 5 years)
- Via UKPHR’s Specialist Registration by Portfolio Assessment route; this involves a pre-application, then if this is approved, you’ll have 18 months to collate a portfolio – this registration route can take 3+ years to register via.
- Via the Dual registration route if you are already registered as a Public Health Specialist with the GMC/GDC.
