The Public Health Skills Passport and the review of the UK Public Health Skills and Knowledge Framework

The ‘Healthy Lives, Healthy People; public health workforce strategy’ (DH/LGA/PHE 2013) identifies the need to refine the Public Health Skills and Knowledge Framework (PHSKF), and to develop a new ‘skills passport’ to support the public health workforce in career development and planning. Public Health England is leading on both of these activities. Click here for a factsheet.

Skills Passport (England)

The skills passport has just begun a ‘proof of concept’ trial which will run from February 9th to March 20th 2015. Public Health workers from a variety of public health disciplines have been engaged to help with this process, participating as individuals, or as teams eg: a cluster of local authority teams in the North East; a PHE centre team; and an NHS provider team in the South East.

The trial will be independently evaluated by an external agency to ensure scrutiny of the process and outcomes, and to reflect on the implications for the public health skills and knowledge framework. The evaluation findings will be reported in May 2015.

UK Public Health Skills and Knowledge Framework (PHSKF) review

The PHSKF review is currently in its second phase in which a series of workshops are being delivered across the UK during February and March. It is hoped that from these workshops the whole public health workforce will be used to consult on how the PHSKF may be currently used and how the framework should be revised so that it is ‘fit for purpose’.

The table below provides information on all the events that will take place, alongside the contact details of the organisers who can be contacted for more detailed and up-to-date information together with the opportunity to book a place.
