Annual Practitioner Event 2014

UKPHR was very pleased to take part in the celebration of the achievements of all practitioner registrants at the Annual Practitioner Event held in Glasgow on Monday 3rd November 2014.

We are grateful to NHS Health Scotland and our West of Scotland practitioner registration scheme for organising, hosting and paying for the event. As a result of this generosity, the 100 free places on offer at this year’s event were all taken.

The proceedings on the day were characterised by learning and celebration. We learned more about the work and successes of the very wide range of public health practitioners and we celebrated their achievements.

Clare Black and Jane Groves gave a presentation about the many achievements to date of the West of Scotland practitioner registration scheme.

David Kidney reported on developments in practitioner registration since we last met in Cardiff in October 2013, including the launch of new schemes in London and North East England.

Shirley Cramer CBE, Chief Executive of Royal Society for Public Health, spoke with obvious authority and knowledge about her work presiding over a new advisory group called People in UK Public Health, which is advising all four UK Health Departments. The wider public health workforce was highlighted in particular.

Gill McVicar, Director of Operations for NHS Highlands, spoke with passion and commitment about drawing the best out of all the public health community, recognising the huge challenge of improving health and reducing health inequalities through a population based approach. The need for manager of this important workforce to have regard to the health and wellbeing of their staff as well as the general public they serve was highlighted.

Grateful thanks are also due to Sally James and Andrew Fraser for chairing the morning and afternoon sessions respectively. Sally is coordinator of the West Midlands practitioner registration scheme and Andrew is Director of Public Health Science at NHS Health Scotland.

Thanks also to Claire McLeod and Andrew Pulford, two practitioners who between them opened and closed the day’s proceedings – each giving an insight into their own motivation and journey to achieve registration.

During the day, UKPHR’s Registrar, Professor Nairn Wilson CBE, presented certificates to six of the 36 practitioners who achieved registration in the past 12 months: Clare Black, Samantha Campbell, Hayley Martin, Andrew Pulford, Heather Sloan and Elaine Young. Congratulations to you all!
