UKPHR Board Director – Specialist member
We are currently looking for someone who is a registered public health specialist either with UKPHR, GMC, or GDC, to join our Board.
About UKPHR
UK Public Health Register (UKPHR) is an independent, dedicated regulator for public health professionals in the United Kingdom. We regulate public health specialists, public health specialty registrars and public health practitioners from a variety of backgrounds, all of whom have a common core of knowledge and skills. Our 2024-29 organisational strategy outlines our priorities.
We are registered at Companies House, and are also a Charity, and are registered as such in England & Wales and in Scotland.
Our Board
Our Board ensures we meet our key aim of protection of the public by setting our strategic direction and monitoring the implementation of strategy. Our Board Directors will support us to ensure we adhere to the principles of good governance and financial management, as well as help us establish and maintain good working relationships with government, leadership bodies and employers for public health professionals.
The Board of 11 members meet 5-6 times/year, online and in person. Most Board members also sit on either the Audit, Risk, & Remuneration or Education & Standards committees.
We aim for a diverse Board that includes lay members as well as public health professionals, who represent various skill sets and interests, and who represent the four nations of the United Kingdom.
The role
Person specification
- Specialist Registration as a Public Health Specialist with either UKPHR, General Medical Council, or General Dental Council
- Record of achievement and influence within the public health sector
- A good understanding of professional regulation and an appreciation of the principles of good regulation
- Board or Committee experience demonstrating the ability to think strategically, look outwardly and hold an organisation to account
- An appreciation of good governance arrangements and willingness to uphold them
- Sound judgement, impartiality and common sense
- Excellent communication skills and ability to debate cogently using structured arguments, respecting others’ views
- Ability to assimilate complex information, weigh evidence and draw conclusions
- Commitment to the Nolan Principles of Public Life and to equality, diversity, and inclusion.
Key areas of reponsibility of the Board and its directors
- Ensure UKPHR meets and maintains its aim of protection of the public by promoting high professional standards of all registered professionals
- Support UKPHR’s objectives and promote its role as a regulatory body for public health
- Determine UKPHR’s purpose and values and review them periodically
- Determine UKPHR’s strategy, broad policies, goals, and objectives, and monitor effectiveness of activity
- Establish and maintain any Committees or other groups to enable UKPHR to fulfil its remit
- Ensure that UKPHR adheres to the principles of good governance
- Ensure appropriate financial management, including regular review of accounts
- Work effectively with UKPHR staff
- Establish and maintain good working relationships with the leadership bodies and employers for public health professionals
Key individual responsibilities:
- Ensure prudent use of all assets, including facilities, people, and good will and provide oversight for all activities that advance UKPHR’s effectiveness and sustainability
- Make decisions in the best interest of UKPHR
- Ensure that UKPHR complies with applicable laws and acts in accordance with ethical practices and principles of equality, diversity and inclusion
- Ensure that UKPHR adheres to its stated corporate purposes and that its activities advance its mission
- Exercise duties diligently, keeping informed about UKPHR’s affairs
- Declare the nature and extent of any personal interest in a proposed or existing transaction or arrangement with UKPHR
- Maintain a duty of confidentiality to UKPHR

UKPHR has appropriate General, Professional, Management and Employer indemnity insurance.
This is a voluntary role, with all reasonable expenses covered by UKPHR.
