Light-touch review of the UKPHR Public Health Practitioner Standards

Consultation Launched

UKPHR Board have undertaken a light-touch review of the UKPHR Public Health Standards for Practitioner Registration. The purpose is to ensure the standards remain consistent with current professional practice; to update and refresh standards, improve those that are difficult to interpret, and update terminology.

 

A consultation on the proposed refreshed standards is open until Friday 20th February.  We’d really value your feedback via UKPHR Practitioner Standards Consultation  Please share these consultation details with your networks, teams and colleagues.

The proposed standards will be revised in response to views from the consultation, and go to UKPHRs Board for sign off in April.

 

The refreshed standards will be published in May 2026 with an implementation timeline. Applicants currently working towards registration are not expected to be affected.

 

Light-touch review of the UKPHR Public Health Practitioner Standards

UKPHR is undertaking a light-touch review of the Public Health Practitioner Standards, following agreement by the UKPHR Board.

Why are the standards being reviewed?

The purpose of this review is to ensure that the Practitioner Standards remain consistent with current professional practice.

The review will focus on:

  • refreshing and updating the standards
  • improving clarity where standards are difficult to interpret
  • updating terminology to reflect current practice

What is included and what is not?

In keeping with a light-touch approach, the scope of the review is limited.

This review does not include:

  • the practitioner assessment or registration process
  • changes to assessor, verifier, moderator or scheme coordinator roles
  • a needs assessment of the public health workforce
  • an evaluation of the value or impact of practitioner registration

Consultation and next steps

A consultation on the refreshed standards will take place in January–February 2026. Stakeholders will be invited to review and comment on draft revised standards, and details of how to contribute will be shared in January.

The refreshed standards are expected to be published in May 2026, alongside an implementation timeline.

Applicants who are currently working towards registration are not expected to be affected by this review.
